Skryne GFC celebrate La na gClubanna
Sunday 08th May 2016 saw the return of the GAA’s Lá na gClubanna, an event designed to acknowledge and celebrate the important roll that the GAA club has played in the communities of Ireland for over a century.
Recognising the importance of this event, Skryne GFC invited all members of the community to join us for our Lá na gClubanna in Fr. Mc Manus Park last Sunday. Those who attended, including many club legends, were treated to a joint training session where all of our teams, young and old, male and female showcased the talents and skills that have made Skryne GFC so competitive at all levels.
Following, the training session, Skryne GFC paid tribute to one of our fallen comrades Jim Fox, who was the very definition of a great clubman. Jim sadly passed away after a battle with illness in 2014. Jim’s wife Lily and sons Nigel and Keith were present at the unveiling of a plaque on the new ball wall of the all weather facility in memory of the great man who represented all that Skryne GFC stands for with his dedication to the club over the years.
Fr. Thomas was then invited to bless the new all weather facility which was built earlier this year to further enhance the fantastic facilities that are available at Fr. McManus Park. Club Chairman Eamon Giles paid tribute to John Thornton for his donation of land to the club which allowed for the building of the new all weather facility. Without this contribution, the all weather facility could not have been completed. The club are eternally grateful to John.
After all the hard work of the joint training session, players, mentors and supporters alike were treated to a barbeque with head chef Mary O’Rourke ably assisted by Laura Campion and Caren Smyth tossing out quality burgers and hotdogs to the hungry masses, while sandwiches, cakes and all sorts of refreshments were enjoyed by all under the watchful eye of the blazing sun which added to the pleasant friendly atmosphere of the day.
The club presented our Player of the Year award to Mark Battersby who had a fantastic year and was well deserving of this recognition from his peers. Mark made his mark(pardon the pun) at both club and county level over the last year and struck fear into many defences along the way.
Skryne GFC also acknowledged the huge contribution our sponsors play in helping the club achieve it’s status as one of the best in Meath. A framed jersey was presented to Michael and Agnes Fox of Euro Farm Foods who are the main sponsors of Skryne GFC. A special thanks to Euro Farm Foods and all of our club sponsors who give so generously to our club.
Well done to all involved in the organisation of this event. We hope to see it returning again in 2017.
