Skryne 3 – 17, Summerhill 0 – 6
Skryne had a comprehensive win over old rivals Summerhill in the Feis Cup played at Skryne on Sunday. While the massive score line suggests that it was the Skryne forwards who were in control of this game, and for the most part they were, it has to be recognised that in restricting Summerhill to just 6 points for the game the Skryne backs played a massive part in this victory. Right from the goalie Felim O’Rourke who made one magnificent save while on his knees, through both full and half-back lines, there was a massive performance. With both Martin Mulvany and Mark Harrington back-boning the central positions and the corner and wing backs taking the ball out of their area with brilliant movements, it was nigh on impossible for Summerhill to break down the Skryne defence. One of those sweeping movements saw corner back Dermot Brennan follow his man up the field only to find himself in behind both backs and forwards where he was delivered a perfect pass from Battersby and he powered the ball past a helpless Summerhill keeper. Skryne scored three goals in this game through Paddy Fox on 14 minutes, Brian Davis just before the break on 32 minutes, and the above mentioned goal from Brennan with 52 minutes on the clock. Brian Davis got Skryne of the mark just after throw-in, with a point. With 5 minutes gone Davis again worked hard for a ball in the left corner and made his way in along the end line only to be dragged down in the square. His brother Ian took the resultant penalty but saw his shot parried over the bar for a point. Summerhill then scored one of their few points of the game, however any lift that might have given them was short lived as a brilliant movement from the Skryne half back line saw Fox gather about forty yards out and no Summerhill back could get close enough for a tackle before he planted the ball firmly in the corner of the net. From there on it was all Skryne who worked like a complete team with most attacks resulting in a score. Points in this period also came from Conor O’Brien (2), Harry Rooney, Kevin Mulvany, and Fox. By half time Summerhill had a mountain to climb with the scoreboard reading: Skryne 2 – 7, Summerhill 0 – 3.
In the second half Skryne took up where they left off with a mark Battersby point on 31 minutes. Brian Davis Paddy Fox, Kevin Mulvany (2) and Conor O’Brien all contributed to the scoreboard which by the 40th minute read Skryne 2 – 13 Summerhill 0 – 3. The South Meath side eventually posted a second-half score with three quarters of the game gone and got a further point on 49 minutes. These two scores were split by a point from a difficult 45 just inside the sideline kicked by wing-back David McGoldrick. Skryne added a further three points through O’ Brien, Battersby, and Rooney. Summerhill brought proceedings to a close well into time- added-on with a final point. Full time score: Skryne 3 – 17; Summerhill 0 – 6
