Goal spree sees Skryne through to decider!

Skryne 5-08 Trim 1-15

U21 Football Championship. Semi-Final

Conditions were ideal in Walterstown for this high noon encounter between Skryne and Trim in the Under 21 Football Championship semi-final. Skryne got off to a slow start in this game with Trim registering the first 4 points before Skryne woke out of their slumber in spectacular style with Darragh Campion finishing to the net to pull Skryne back into the game. A point from inspirational captain John Morley levelled matters. It was nip and tuck throughout the first half with both sides trading scores. Darragh Campion, Niall Morley and Jason Fox pointed for Skryne while Trim added 4 of their own to lead by a point after 25 minutes. Skryne finished the half strongly and earned a penalty for their toils when Darragh Campion burst through on goal and was hauled down in the penalty area. The ever dependable Jason Fox stepped up to slam the penalty past the Trim keeper. Paddy Doherty added another point on the stroke of half time to send Skryne into the dressing-room with a 3 point lead on a scoreline of 2-05 to 0-08.

Trim were quick out of the blocks in the second half and pointed with their first attack to reduce the deficit to 2. Skryne replied with 2 quick-fire points from Cian Lynch and Doherty again. Trim were in no mood to lie down and fought back with 2 points of their own. Niall Morley popped up again to grab his second point of the day, before Eoin Smyth rattled the back of the Trim net midway through the half to give Skryne a six point cushion. Skryne even at this stage looked to be home and dry, but the concession of 3 free kicks in a row in dangerous areas allowed the Trim freetaker who was in lethal form to reduce the gap to 3 again.  Trim looked to be back in it, but they suffered another sucker punch when Niall Morley collected possession to the left of the Trim goal and hammered past the beleaguered Trim keeper for Skryne’s fourth goal of the afternoon. The lead was back to 6. Trim rallied again and bagged a goal of their own with 4 minutes remaining. They continued to heap on the pressure and in the last minute of normal time they tagged on another point leaving only 2 points between the teams with around 4 minutes injury time remaining. But that was as good as it got for the men in red as Eoghan Greene made a surging run forward into unfamiliar territory and slammed the ball into the top right corner of the net for Skryne’s fifth goal. There was no time left for the Trim men to counter. Skryne ran out winners with an excellent team performance on a scoreline of 5-08 to 1-15 against a spirited Trim side.
