Skryne faced North Meathmen Moylagh in Round 4 of the A League Division 5. Skryne were unlucky to fall to Wolfe Tones in Round 3 as they surrendered a narrow lead to the Tones men to lose out narrowly. Meanwhile Moylagh secured their first victory in Round 3 with a convincing 10 point victory over Seneschalstown, so Skryne wer under no illusions about the challenge that lay ahead as they took to the field on a sunny Sunday morning in Fr. Mc Manus Park.
In an entertaining game, Moylagh were the more threatening in the opening half and raced into a 4 points to 1 lead with their lively midfield causing difficulties as they ran at the Skryne defence. Points from Andrew Canavan, Neil Burke and Dan Fitzpatrick restored parity at the midway point of the half, but Moylagh rallied again outscoring Skryne by 6 points to 2 to lead by 0-10 to 0-06 with 2 minutes remaining in the half. It was then that Ciarán Quinn hit Skryne’s opening goal after Jack Dardis broke up a Moylagh attack. He shifted the ball forward to Cormac Pentony who found Conor Reuter attacking forward on the right-hand side. Reuter spotted the run of Ciarán Quinn in front of the Moylagh goal and delivered the ball into his arms. Quinn made no mistake firing past the Moylagh keeper to reduce the deficit to a single point at half-time. Skryne 1-06, Moylagh 0-10.
Skryne had the benefit of a stiff breeze in the second half and although Moylagh drew first blood with the opening score of the half, it was Skryne who upped the ante in the third quarter hitting 2-04 points without a reply to storm into the lead, the goals coming one after the other on the 13th and 15th minute with Stephen Corry striking first followed by Charlie Swan giving Skryne an 8 point lead at the midway point of the half. Moylagh added a pointed free, but there was no relenting from Skryne who continued to turn the screw. Robert Gallagher added to Skryne’s tally before Liam Donohoe hit Skryne’s fourth goal with eight minutes remaining to lead by 11 points. The game was up for the men from Moylagh and 4 more points to a single response saw Skryne secure a comfortable win after a fine second half performance. Full-time: Skryne 4-15, Moylagh 0-13.
