Tommy Dowd Oil A League Division 5 – Round 2
Sunday morning’s A League Division 5 game was put back to the earlier time of 10:30am to accommodate fans who wished to travel to the Meath/Louth game in Iniskeen. Kilmainhamwood despite being the away team boasted a much bigger squad than Skryne and had a packed bench at the other end of the dugout. This was definitely an advantage for the North Meath men who were able to freshen things up throughout, while Skryne had to re-introduce players that had been withdrawn earlier in the game in order to replace tired legs.
Skryne certainly utilised the new rules in the first half when they raced into a five point lead thanks to 3 x two pointers, two from Andrew Canavan frees and the third, a screamer from play from the left boot of Ciarán Quinn. Kilmainhamwood hit back with a goal 21 minutes in when they breached the Skryne rearguard with an attack on the right flank. The ball was passed across the face of the Skryne goal where it was fisted to the net by Adam Crosbie to leave two points between the sides. Kilmainhamwood continued their late first half charge and added a further two points to draw level as the half-time whistle sounded. Half-time: Skryne 0-06, Kilmainhamwood 1-03.
Kilmainhamwood built on their first half momentum when they added two early points taking a lead which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. An Andrew Canavan free reduced the deficit to a single point, but then Kilmainhamwood struck a body-blow with 10 minutes gone in the half when Eoin Finnegan weaved his way to the edge of the Skryne penalty area before blasting the ball to the back of the net. The Wood stretched their lead to five points when they added a free at the midway point of the half. The sides swapped scores with Andrew Canavan adding a pointed free for Skryne. Skryne pressed forward in search of scores which would reignite their challenge. Stephen Corry sent a fine ball into Charlie Swan who played a one two before firing to the net to reduce the deficit to just two points with 9 minutes remaining. However, despite the Skryne pressure, Kilmainhamwood were able to poach two further points to see them over the line to victory in what was a tight game.
