St. Peters, Dunboyne hold out against late surge from Skryne

St. Peter’s Dunboyne 1-16 Skryne 4-06

With 45 minutes on the clock this looked like a match where Dunboyne would run out easy winners.  However Skryne introduced substitute Alan Carty who won that extra bit of ball which made a difference. From this they tagged on a further 3 goals and three points to leave them only one point adrift at the final whistle.  Dunboyne were first to trouble the scoreboard keeper with a point after just one minute but this was immediately cancelled out by Stephen O’Brien. Two minutes later it was John Morley’s turn to equalise at 0-2 each.  From then to the end Skryne were playing catch-up and just ran out of time at the finish.  Dunboyne tagged on points on the fifth, eleventh and twelfth minute before setting themselves up nicely with a goal on the sixteenth minute. Mark Battersby traded points with Dunboyne on the twentieth minute and punched a considerable hole in the deficit with a goal a minute later.  Dunboyne closed the scoring with a point just on half time to leave the score at Skryne 1 – 3 Dunboyne 1 -8.

The second half resumed with four unanswered points from Dunboyne in the next thirteen minutes making it a nine point difference at 1 – 3 to 1 – 12.  However points on forty five, forty seven and forty nine minutes from John Morley and two from Mark Battersby gave the Tara men some hope of a revival.  This seemed to inject some urgency into the Dunboyne side and they posted two quick points on fifty one and fifty two minutes.  Then with fifty four minutes on the clock Morley cracked home a great goal which was followed up a minute later with one from Ronan McCabe making the score Skryne 3 – 6, Dunboyne 1 – 14 leaving just two points the difference.  Dunboyne tagged on two late points but just when you thought that there would be no more twists in the game Morley and Battersby combined to scramble the ball over the Dunboyne goal line leaving just the minimum between the sides with time virtually up.  Skryne won the kick out and Paddy Fox after a great run made a valiant effort to take both points but his shot came back of the post.  The final score was Skryne 4 – 6; Dunboyne 1 – 16.

Skryne: I. Gillette, N. Lenehan, K.Lenehan, J. Looby, R. McCabe, M. Jordan, A. O’Sullivan, A. Tuite, D. Ryan, C. O’Brien, S.O’Brien, P. Fox, J. Morley, T.McKeown, M.Battersby.  Subs: A. Carty for K.Lenehan (44min)
