Congratulations to all the young and young at heart participants who joined in all the fun at the Skryne GFG sports day on Sunday 9/5/2011.
Fabulous sunshine and well decorated pitch helped create a lovely atmosphere & a huge range of events kept everyone active all afternoon.
The underage racing highlighted some serious talent in the parish at all age group while the novelty events like the three legged races, sack races, wheel barrow , egg and spoon and piggy back races kept the large crowd entertained.
Official starter for the afternoon Padraic Finnerty ensured the racing ran like clockwork and nobody envied the spotters at the finish who had to decide the finishing order as there were mass finishes to a lot of events.
A request will go into GAA HQ to allow the use of Hawk Eye technology next year.
Away from the racing area there was great entertainment with a number of skill based events where all the family could take part whether it was horse shoe throwing , nearest the flag or kicking a ball through a tyre.
Big crowds lined up for an opportunity to beat Skryne goalkeepers Johhny Quinn and Trevor Giles in a timed shootout competition.
No shortage of advice from the sideline regarding technique at the ever popular Welly Throwing and Egg Throwing competitions.
Burger stall and shop were busy all afternoon and the face painting was a huge hit as Angela Kirwan and her team ensured that there were more creatures roaming around the pitch than you would see in Tayto Park.
Back on the race track following some encouragement from MC on the day and club chairman Dermot Carty , a large number of shy parents lined up for the Mothers and Fathers races. These turned out to be the most controversial races of the day with claims of early starters , barging ,tripping and running out of lane. Both races were subject to stewards enquiry.
Many thanks to all the club members that took the time to get involved to arrange and run the event as without their dedication and input , events such as the sports day could not take place. The work put in by the volunteers on Saturday and Sunday was evident with bunting and flags all around the pitch and competition areas clearly marked out and fenced off.
Overall it was a great family day out and another great club event with winners receiving medals from underage chairman Des Finnerty.
