As you no doubt know by now, members of Skryne football club will take on Duleek/Bellewstown on Saturday 24 November in a White Collar Boxing event in the Pillo hotel Ashbourn. Most of the participants are current players on our adult teams although there are a few who have finished playing and have come in to be part of the event. We have one lady, Michelle Whelan, participating. These members have been training two night a week for the past six weeks. They have, as requested, raised sponsorship and have been selling tickets to all their friends for the event. All funds raised go to financing the ongoing needs of our club and the current development of our facilities.
It must be stated that while the participants from both sides will be giving it their all on the night, White Collar Boxing is not a serious boxing event such as National championships or the Olympics. It is very much a fun event and the referee will be there first and foremost to ensure that no-one is put under more pressure than they should be. The participants have been very well matched against an opponent of their own size and ability.
One cannot but be struck by the level of use of our playing facilities by members from six years of age up. It is a credit to those who organise regular training and guidance for them. These are the Adult teams of tomorrow. They the ones who will, with a bit of luck, bring back plenty of silverware to Skryne and give us all the opportunity of celebrating again as a community in the way which we have enjoyed in the past. However the running of a football club, especially a club like Skryne, now takes a lot of money. Long gone are the days when clubs operated on a shoe string budget. In fact turnover is much more like that of a successful small business. Even without the amount of funds which have gone to paying for our new clubhouse development this year, we have spent a considerable amount on the normal running of our club. Precise figures will be available at our AGM which takes place on Friday 14 December.
We are very privileged in Skryne to have the young men and women who are prepared to take part in an event such as the White Collar Boxing tournament. They are a credit to our Club as well as to their families and friends. We owe it to them to give them the best support we can on the night. We are also privileged in having a community who support our club without whom the club would cease to exist. All members and supporters have an opportunity to participate in this event by being there to give our boxers as much support as possible. Let them know you are behind them. The opposition are guaranteed to have a huge following and we need to match them with as much support as Skryne has traditionally given to its players on the football field. Come on over to Ashbourne and enjoy what promises to be a cracker of a night.
