After a number of poor results from different Skryne teams, Skryne needed a boost before the all-important Senior Championship game this weekend. With one game left to play it fell to those on the B league Div 5 team to try to get the required result in the match with St. Brigid’s in Skryne on Tuesday evening and they came up trumps. The Ballinacree team raced into an early lead and had two points on the board by the second minute. Eight minutes had elapsed before Sean Cassidy posted the first of Skryne’s scores. Sean was to contribute a total of 1 – 5 of his sides total in an outstanding performance. Much of the first half was dominated by the North Meath side and a goal on fifteen minutes put them 1 – 3 to 0 – 2 ahead. Racing forward from the half back line Kieran O’ Rourke reduced this to a single goal but with twenty seven minutes gone St. Brigid’s cancelled out this point. However, Skryne finished strongly with two points from corner back James Conroy and Sean Cassidy to leave the half time score at Skryne 0 – 5; St. Brigid’s 1 – 4.
The second half was only two minutes old when a long hopeful ball as delivered into the St. Brigids square. Corner forward Mark O’Brien ran in and beat the backs to get his fist to the ball for Skryne’s first goal. This gave the Tara men the lead for the first time in the game. The goal was quickly followed by a point from Cassidy but this was cancelled out by a score for St. Brigids on thirty five minutes to leave the score at Skryne 1 – 6, St Brigids 1 -5. Twelve further minutes were to elapse before St. Brigid’s equalised. However, this was to be their last score of the game and while the game hung in the balance for a further eight minutes it was Sean Cassidy who eventually broke the deadlock with a point and followed up immediately with a goal from a brilliant individual effort when he shot from a very acute anglel. Brian Smyth, Paddy Doherty and Niall Morley completed the scoring for Skryne with three further points. Final Score Skryne 2 – 10; St Brigid’s 1 – 6.
