Feis Cup Quarter Final
Skryne 0-15 Simonstown Gaels 2-15
Skryne bowed out of the Feis Cup at the quarter final stage tonight when beaten by Simonstown on a score line of 2-15 to 0-15 in Walterstown. After all the rain over the last few days this match was played in ideal conditions for good football on a pitch in great order with a nice cushion of grass. Skryne started the game in confident mood and were 4 points to the good after seven minutes through John Morley, Adam O’Sullivan, Conor O’Brien and an excellent effort from Neal Burke. This early lead for Skryne proved to be a false dawn as Simonstown were quickly level with a goal and a point and then forged ahead as Skryne’s indiscretions were punished by the excellent free taking of the Navan sides full forward who contributed four of their eight first half points. Conceding goals seems to be the blues main problem at this stage of the season and two more in the first half of this game proved decisive. In fact they could have conceded two more but for a couple of fine saves by Ian Gillette. Simonstown led at half time by 2-8 to 0-7.
The second half was much more evenly balanced with Skryne adding eight points to Simonstowns seven. Unfortunately Skryne’s tendency to misplace passes and in some cases to overcarry the ball added to their problems and ultimately their downfall. Overall the Skryne forwards as a unit did quite well, a total of fifteen points would win most matches and had Allan Carty’s shot with ten minutes remaining in the match found the back of the net instead of hitting the post then the result would have been much closer. But, as stated previously, concession of goals seems to be the difficulty at the moment.
