Trim 1 – 10
Skryne 1 – 7
In rain soaked Dunganny Skryne minors were defeated by 3 pints to a Trim side who were much physically stronger and better suited to the conditions. Despite the rain sodden pitch the Skryne lads played sublime football for the first 20 minutes of this final and were 6 points to 1 up thanks to pints from Niall Burke, John Morley (2) Paul McGoldrick, Conor O’ Brien, and Niall Morley. However in the last ten minutes of the half Trim struck back with four points from James Toher (2), Sean Magee, and Shane O’Connor leaving Skryne with just the slimmest margin at the break.
The second half was barley a minute old when Trim struck for a goal. The ball should have been cleared but ran loose to Trim’s Colm McGtath who blasted to the back of the net giving Trim a two point advantage and the lead for the first time in the game. Conor O’ Brien reduced this to the bare minimum on 42 minutes. Three minutes later a very good Skryne move saw O’ Brien advance on goal but he was dragged down by the Trim corner back and the referee hav no choice but to award Skryne a penalty. Paul McGoldrick took responsibility for the spotkick and expertly slotted it past the hapless Danny Connell in the Trim goal. This restored the Skryne lead of two points. However they failed to score again whereas Trim scored a further five points to leave the full time score at Trim 1 – 10, Skryne 1 – 7.
This is a good Skryne outfit and no doubt had the day been different the game would have had a different outcome. The wet conditions favoured the physically stronger Trim side. All credit is due to the management team of Mick O’Dowd and Martin Kennedy for their preparation of these lads. There can be no doubt that we will see this bunch of lads in Skryne jersies again when they will be on the winning side.
