Skryne 0 – 10
Walterstown 0 – 10
With the late arrival of Summer and the Championship rounds drawing to a close the match in Dunshaughlin always promised to be a very competitive affair between these two arch rivals and that is what it turned out to be. Skryne already were knocked out because of the results on Saturday night but as Walterstown had knocked them out in 2011 there was no way that they would go out just for the run and fully intended to give the best account of themselves that was possible. But hype never won a match yet and wouldn’t win this encounter either. Indeed with nine minutes left on the clock, and scores hard to come by, Skryne were four points behind and Walterstown looked odds on to beat their arch rivals for the second year in a row. But the Taramen dug deep and were unlucky not to finish with full points. However they had to settle for a share of the points instead.
Walterstown were first to score after two minutes but points from Paddy O’ Rourke and Ian Davis soon had Skryne in front with ten minutes gone. Walterstown then had points on thirteen and sixteen minutes however another from Paddy O’ Rourke levelled matters at three points each with twenty minutes gone. Walterstown finished out the half with two more points on the twenty eight and thirtieth minute to go into the break two ahead.
The second half was only a minute old when Walterstown scored again and then went four ahead with thirty eight minutes gone. Ian Davis pulled one back for Skryne on the fortieth minute but this was cancelled out immediately. Mark Battersby scored another for Skryne but again Walterstown restored their advantage to four points with fifty one minutes gone. However this would prove to be Walterstown’s last score and within a minute Trevor Giles scored leaving the scores, with eight minutes to go, Walterstown 0 – 10; Skryne 0 – 7. Skryne upped the tempo of the match considerably and Ronan McCabe found the range with five minutes left to play. Two minutes later Mark Battersby scored for Skryne ensuring the large crowd of a grand stand finish. With one minute left Ciaran Lenehan scored for Skryne and left the match a 0 – 10 apiece. With time running out both teams made valiant efforts to take the points but time ran out and the spoils were shared.
