High scoring game in Skryne

Skryne 4-09 St. Colmcilles 3-15

Premier Football Championship. Division 5 – Round 7.

Skryne and St. Colmcilles served up a very entertaining game in this ‘dead rubber’ in Division 5 of the Premier Championship. Skryne had already qualified for the Semi Final of this competition while St. Colmcilles had nothing to play for except pride. Skryne were short a number of players for this match but they began this one as if they needed the win to qualify. They had 3 goals on the scoreboard before the Cilles settled down and led by 9 points at the first water break. 3 goals from the excellent Aidan Gill and another from Allan Carty, before he retired injured, seemed to have the Blues in a strong position but by half time St. Colmcilles had clawed their way back to parity on a scoreline of Skryne 4-2 St. Colmcilles 2-8.

The Cilles began the second half much better than the Blues and scored 1-3 without reply to go 6 points clear. Then it was Skryne’s turn to claw back the lead and this they did to get back within a point of the winners.  But they just  couldn’t get level even though they had some chances to do so.

Nevertheless, as already stated, this was very entertaining for 3rd team football and both teams can be justifiably proud of the manner in which they played the game.

Apart from the lads already mentioned Skryne had top class performances from Daniel Fitzpatrick and Dermot Brennan in midfield, Paul McGoldrick, James Keane and Paddy O’Leary in defence and veteran Felim O’Rourke up front.

In fact Paddy O’Leary and Aidan Gill vied with each other for the accolade of Man of the Match but overall this was a team effort and bodes well for the upcoming semi final which will take place in two weeks time.

Skryne – Gary Browne. Paddy O’Leary, Paul McGoldrick, Liam Gill. Ciaran Finnerty, James Looby, James Keane (0-1).Dermot Brennan, Daniel Fitzpatrick (0-1). Alan Tuite, Allan Carty (1-1), Sean Cassidy (0-1). Aidan Gill (3-0), Felim O’Rourke (0-5), Bryan Clarke.

Subs – Brian Smyth and Oisin Coyle.
