Another heavy defeat for Skryne

Skryne 0-6 St. Peters Dunboyne 3-17

Premier Football Championship. Division 1 – Round 6.

Another disappointing performance from the boys in blue in foggy Skryne saw St. Peters, Dunboyne cruise to a 20 point victory. Skryne have struggled badly in Division 1 this year, with only a single point to show for their efforts after six rounds as they continue to prop up the table. To be fair, the team have lost players to the senior squad and continue to preserve players for the third team, so they haven’t had the biggest panel to choose from all year.

Skryne were on the backfoot from the off in this game and didn’t register a single score in the opening quarter. Dunboyne on the other hand hit 2-4 as they took early control of this game. The first goal came with only 4 minutes on the clock when their lively corner forward gathered possession in the right corner. He fisted the ball across the goal to the full forward who blasted past Des McAvinney from close range. The second goal came just before the water break when the Dunboyne centre forward broke through the defensive line on the left hand side and hit an unstoppable shot from outside the Skryne penalty area to the roof of the Skryne net.

Skryne’s best quarter was the second quarter. Dunboyne opened the scoring with a point, but Skryne hit 3 points without a reply with Jason Reddy kicking things off with a point from play after brother Cian won a free when helping out in the Skryne defence. His ball forward started the move that ended with Jason firing over from in front of goal. 2 pointed frees from Jason Reddy and James Hegarty saw Skryne threaten a comeback. But the comeback was short-lived as Dunboyne hit 2 points before half-time to ensure they had a comfortable half-time lead. Half-time Skryne 0-3, St. Peters, Dunboyne 2-07.

The sides traded scores in the third quarter, scoring 3 points each. Skryne’s scores came from Paul Bannon, David McGoldrick and James Hegarty(free). But the final quarter was all Dunboyne who hit 1-7 without reply to condemn Skryne to a demoralising defeat.

Skryne: Des McAvinney. Barry Clarke. Jack Dardis, Jack Swan; Kristoffer Kinsella, Andrew Moore, Keith Donoghue. Niall Morland, David McGoldrick(0-1). Jack O’Donnell, Frank Carty, James Hegarty(0-2, 2f). Cian Reddy, Jason Reddy(0-2, 1f), Paul Bannon(0-1).

Subs – George Fitzpatrick, Alex Grendon, Scott Armstrong, Paddy Wright
