Tones seal victory in Skryne

Skryne 0-9, Wolfe Tones 1-13

Premier Football Championship. Division 1 – Round 4.

The starting team for Skryne in this evening’s game had 11 changes from the team that lined out in Round 3 of this competition. Skryne, while competing well outfield, struggled to make it count on the scoreboard and Wolfe Tones had amassed a four point lead before Skryne got off the mark with a free from Neil Burke on the twelfth minute. Full forward Kyle Moran had been the main threat upfront for the Tones with an early hat-trick of points, while Joe Smith proved to be an accomplished free taker for the Tones throughout. Skryne’s own reliable free taker Neil Burke added a second point just before the water break to keep Skryne in touch. Water-break: Skryne 0-2, Wolfe Tones 0-4.

Wolfe Tones quickly added a fifth point on the resumption when centre back Niall McLoughlin stole up field and sent the ball over the black spot. Neil Burke slotted over another free for Skryne while Joe Smith added two more for the Tones. On the stroke of half time Burkey added yet another free   to leave only three between the sides at half-time. Skryne 0-4, Wolfe Tones 0-7.

The ever lively Cian Reddy opened the scoring in the second half with a lovely sidefooted point from a tight angle on the right hand side of the Tones penalty area after receiving the ball from Paul Bannon. Joe Smith replied instantly with a pointed free. Mark McFadden extended their lead with another from play. Neil Burke then sent James Hegarty through on the Tones goal but his shot was repelled out for a 45 by Tones keeper David Nolan. Neil Burke got his first point from play nine minutes into the half. He took a shot with the outside of his boot which struck the post and rebounded back into play. He made no mistake after picking up the broken ball and slotting over. Skryne were hit with a sucker punch on the thirteenth minute of the half when Tom Gavigan broke through the Skryne rear guard and blasted to the net. A Joe Smith point from play a minute later stretched their lead to seven points at the second half water break. Skryne 0-6; Wolfe Tones 1-10.

Tones moved further ahead with two more points, a free from the Smith and a fine point from Thomas Blaney. Skryne to their credit kept plugging away and scorer in chief Neil Burke increased his personal tally to seven with two more points(one free). Skryne almost hit a goal with five minutes remaining when they were awarded a free directly in front of the goals on the 13 metre line. Neil Burke hit a rasper of an effort which hit the underside of the bar and bounced out before it was cleared away by the Tones. A final Joe Smith free and a point from Keith Donoghue were the last scores as the game fizzled out to it’s inevitable conclusion, a Tones victory which moves them up to third in the table, while Skryne remain rooted to the bottom. Final score: Skryne 0-9, Wolfe Tones 1-13.
