Slick Trim see off Skryne
Trim 4-12 Skryne 2-09
Premier Football Championship. Division 1 – Round 1.
Skryne travelled to Trim yesterday evening to kick off their Premier Football Championship campaign. Skryne’s last game in this competition was the final in September 2020 where they lost out to Donaghmore/Ashbourne.
Trim looked up for this game from the very off and their speed and mobility was something that would cause Skryne problems all through the game. Trim opened the scoring with a point with only a minute on the clock. Skryne lost David Ratbourne to injury with less than five minutes played and he was replaced by Tommy Kelly who proved to be a very able deputy as he went on to have a fine game. Despite a strong start from Trim, it was Skryne who galloped ahead on the scoreboard with four points without a reply from Trim, Padraig Finnerty with two frees and one each from Paddy Fox and Bryan Davis.
Trim then hit a purple patch notching up four points in a row and also forced an excellent save from Ian Gillett when their midfielder broke through on goal and shot to the left hand side. Ian Gillett dived and parried the shot to safety. Trim also spurned another golden opportunity when their centre back again ran at the Skryne defence before squaring the ball across to one of his teammates who had lost his footing and ended up lying on the ground when the ball reached him. Thankfully for Skryne, he was unable to make contact with the ball and the chance went abegging. This meant there was only a point between the sides at the first water break. Trim 0-5, Skryne 0-4.
After the resumption, David Carroll came to Skryne’s rescue when he saved a palmed effort from Trim’s centre forward who stole in to the Skryne penalty area to get on the end of another squared ball. Skryne were living dangerously but points from Neil Burke and another from Padraig Finnerty(a free) saw Skryne edge ahead again. A point from the Trim full-forward saw them draw level again with five minutes remaining in the half. Skryne were then hit with two hammer blows as half time approached. The first came on 29 minutes when the Trim centre back again burst forward before laying off to their midfielder who smashed the ball to the back of the net. The next came from their number 12 who showed real pace when he broke past the Skryne defender from the left hand side close to the end line and then slid the ball low under the advancing Ian Gillett from close range. Another point from a free saw Trim take a commanding lead at half time. Trim 2-7 Skryne 0-6.

Skryne were first to strike in the second half with Bryan Davis driving over a superb point from near the right hand side touchline. Trim replied with a point from their centre forward. Trim moved further ahead when they dealt Skryne another body blow with a third goal, coming from another run through the Skryne defence which was centred this time by the Trim number 12 and was palmed to the net by their full forward. Craig Nolan, who was introduced at half time for Skryne, slotted over a point from the left hand side as Skryne tried to rein in the Trim men. Trim almost had a fourth goal when a pot shot from their centre forward from the right hand side hit the crossbar and rebounded away. Skryne got hold of the ball and immediately worked it up the field with Padraig Finnerty making an excellent run through the Trim defence. He passed to Niall Morland on the right hand side and he moved in on goal before centering to David McGoldrick who calmly rolled the ball under the advancing keeper for Skryne’s opening goal.
The excellent Frank Carty made a foray forward on the quarter hour mark and played a 1-2 with Tommy Carpenter before firing a superb effort towards the Trim goal but he found the Trim keeper in excellent form and his shot was palmed away for a 45. Padraig Finnerty converted the 45 and Skryne had reduced the deficit to just five points at the second half water break. Trim 3-8, Skryne 1-9.
Trim hit the gas straight after the water break and reeled off a goal and four points without a reply from Skryne to put the game to bed. A Bryan Davis goal on the half hour proved to be small consolation for Skryne who never recovered from the two late goals in the first half and Trim earned a well deserved victory. Full-time: Trim 4-12, Skryne 2-9.
