Skryne snatch a draw but should have bagged a win
Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-11 Skryne 0-14
Premier Cup, Group B – Round 1.
Conditions were far from ideal for Skryne’s first competitive match of the 2022 season. The rain held off for the entire game but a strong wind was to have quite an impact on the game. The wind was blowing directly towards the goal at the road end.
Skryne faced into the wind in the first half. Donaghmore/Ashbourne looked to be making good use of their wind advantage registering ten first half points to Skryne’s three, one from John Morley and two from Neil Burke. Ian Gillett did well to save a shot at the butt of his post on the stroke of half time to ensure the half time deficit remained at seven points. Half-time: Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-10, Skryne 0-03.

The tables turned completely in the second half when Skryne had the wind on their backs. John Morley again opened the scoring for Skryne, quickly followed by a point from Craig Nolan. Donaghmore/Ashbourne got the first of their two second half scores on the seventh minute of the half, but Skryne went on to score eight points without a reply to race into a two point lead as the game hit the hour mark. Then came a sucker punch. Just when Skryne looked like they were in control and were heading for victory, Donaghmore/Ashbourne worked the ball down the pitch and fired an unstoppable shot from the right-hand side of the Skryne goal into the back of Ian Gillett’s net to take a one point lead. Skryne pushed forward in search of an equaliser as injury time ticked by. With four minutes of injury time played Skryne won a free which in the conditions, was far from a gimme. Neil Burke stepped up and composed himself before calmly shooting over to level the game.
While Skryne were relieved to get the equaliser, there was a feeling of disappointment that they hadn’t held on for the victory that their second half performance deserved.
