Skryne Slaughter Simonstown!

Skryne 3-24 Simonstown Gaels 1-10

Junior A Football Championship. Group B, Round 4

Simonstown suffered their second heavy defeat in the space of a week and Skryne had their second win in the same period after this Junior Football Championship game played in ideal conditions in Bective.

On an excellent surface, which is a credit to the Bective club, the lighter but faster and slicker Skryne team were on top from the outset. Felim O’Rourke scored the first of his seven points from a fifty in the first minute which came as a result of an excellent save from Gazza in the Simonstown goals to prevent a certain goal for the Blues. Then with the scores level at two points each Skryne opened up and scored six good points without reply. This set the trend for the rest of the match and Skryne led at the break by ten points after Eoin Smyth scored the first of his two goals to leave the score 1-12 to 0-5.

The second half saw Skryne continue to bombard the Navan men’s goals scoring a further twelve points and two more goals – one from Paddy Carpenter who had just returned from holidays and Smyth adding his second.

Like last weeks win over Moylagh, this was a real team effort from the Tara men where every member played their part. This is evident from the fact that 3-20 was scored from play, most of which were as a result of superb combination football all over the field. Having said that it is only fair to mention the excellent contribution of Des McAvinney in goals, great efforts from Dermot Brennan, Paddy Carpenter and a Man-of-the-Match display from Barry Clarke in defence. David Lynch – only passed fit just before the game after illness during the week – Eoin Smyth and Niall Morley were in fine form while the accuracy of Felim O’Rourke proved to be a thorn in Simonstown’s side all through.

Next on the agenda for Skryne is the final group match versus Clonard on Sunday 14th in Trim.

Skryne – Des McAvinney. Shane McEnroy, Dermot Brennan, Barry Clarke. Paddy Carpenter (1-2), Ronan McCabe, Darren Fox. David McGoldrick (0-1), David Lynch (0-1). Jason Fox (0-1), Eoin Smyth (2-4), Declan Mulvey. Sean Cassidy (0-1), Niall Morley (0-4), Felim O’Rourke (0-7).

Subs. Eoghan Greene, Jason Reddy (0-2), Vinny O’Reilly (0-1), and John Quinn.
