Summerhill overcome Skryne
Summerhill 2-13 Skryne 1-10
Junior A Football Championship. Group C, Round 6
In a very competitive game played in Moynalvey today Summerhill defeated Skryne in the Junior Football Championship. The winners of this match are well in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition with one game still to be played.
Skryne, due to a number of reasons, made NINE changes from the team which beat Dunshaughlin in the last round only last week. But the 17 players used today played brilliantly and cannot be faulted in any way. They did the Club proud in a match in which Summerhill were red hot favourites and had the luxury of choosing from number of substitutes. Skryne on the other hand had just two and were forced to use one of these very early in the game when Brian Smyth had to retire with hamstring trouble.
The ‘Hill began this game at a frantic pace and were a goal up after less than two minutes when the ball was bundled into the Skryne net despite a great block from Felim O’Rourke.
Things looked bleak for the Blues at this early stage but they recovered really well and matched Summerhill in every department for the rest of the half. Skryne led at half time thanks to a goal and a point from Sean Cassidy close to the break leaving the score Skryne 1-7 Summerhill 1-6.

The ‘Hill began the second half as they had the first and quickly added three points to go two clear. But Skryne never gave up and it took a second Summerhill goal to kill off their determined effort. Unfortunately for the Blues this goal for the ‘Hill was of the lucky variety as it was deflected off a Skryne player and gave Felim no chance.
All six Skryne defenders were on top of their game today particularly Ronan McCabe who scored two points from his centre back position. He got great help from Frank Carty and David Carroll. In midfield Donie Ryan and David Lynch did well to break even with very strong opponents while upfront Sean Cassidy had his best game of the season after a shaky start. Kevin O’Reilly also caused problems for the Summerhill defence when he came on but overall just 3 points scored in the second half will not win too many matches.
Having said that, nobody could be critical of the effort this team put in today and their performance could set an example for the rest of the club from under six to adult.
