Wolfe Tones secure victory with the help of two late second half goals
Wolfe Tones 2-10 Skryne 0-11
JAFC Group C – Round 4
Two late second half goals were enough to see Wolfe Tones prevail in today’s Junior Football Championship Round 4 encounter in sunny Walterstown.
Skryne had more of the possession in the first half but failed to convert this possession into scores. Indeed it took Skryne 16 minutes to register their opening score of the half despite plenty of forays forward. Their opening score came from the boot of Aidan Tuite. Wolfe Tones already had three points on the board at this stage. Jason Fox who was excellent in the first half, was next to add to Skryne’s tally. Wolfe Tones opened the gap again with two further points, but Skryne with points from Darren Fox, Allan Carty and Colm Craigie levelled matters as the half came to a close. Half-time score: Wolfe Tones 0-05, Skryne 0-05.

Skryne had the benefit of the breeze in the second half and a point inside the opening minute of the half from Felim O’Rourke saw them take the lead for the first time in the match. Neil Burke tacked on another as Skryne looked to be in the driving seat. However, Tones almost grabbed a goal on the 16th minute, but Des McAviney blocked a close range shot from the Tones forward and then quickly pawed away the follow up to preserve Skryne’s lead. Tones slotted over a 45 followed by a point from play to level matters once again. The game was entering the closing stages when Colm Craigie who had been booked earlier in the game, was hit in the back by a Tones player without warning. Colm instinctively retaliated. Both Colm and the Tones man were issued with yellow cards, but as it was Colm’s second yellow, he also got a red which saw him leave the field. Jason Fox put Skryne ahead once more, before disaster struck with 3 minutes remaining in the game. Tones lofted a ball into the Skryne penalty area. A Tones man got his fist to the ball first and deflected it over Des McAviney towards the empty Skryne goal. Jack Dardis rushed in to clear the ball, but the umpires adjudged that ball had already crossed the line before Jack’s intervention and a goal was awarded. Skryne pushed forward in search of scores to rescue the game, but were caught once again by a Tones counter attack which yielded a second goal and put the game beyond Skryne’s reach. Sean Cassidy did notch a consolation point with seconds remaining while Wolfe Tones added another pointed 45 to leave the full-time score Wolfe Tones 2-10, Skryne 0-11.
