Late rally sees Skryne through
St. Patricks 1-15 Skryne 2-16
Feis Cup – Round 1
On a fine evening in Stamullen, Skryne needed a late rally to see off a typically dogged St. Pats side. A superb opportunistic goal from a free by Paddy O’Rourke gave Skryne the impetus to go on and win the game.
Skryne welcomed back Harry Rooney and Eoin Smyth from injury. Smyth was on fire all night, posing a constant threat to the Pats defence, while Rooney who lined out with strapping on his injured hand was willing as always to attack on the front foot attracting a lot of attention from the Pats defence. Skryne started off well with plenty of possession, but found themselves three points down when Pats tapped over a free followed by two points from lively corner forward Donal Landy. Skryne drew level with points from Niall Morley, James Hegarty and Paddy O’Rourke. Skryne wasted a number of good scoring opportunities before Pats pointed as the game approached the midway point of the half. Skryne then hit another hat-trick of points, Niall Morley and Paddy O’Rourke with their second of the game, while Ian Davis also opened his account. Pats tagged on another while Skryne continued to rack up the wide count. Pats took the lead on the 23rd minute with a well taken goal from their centre forward who made no mistake when presented with an opportunity in front of the Skryne goalmouth. They added a point a minute later to see them move three clear, but late replies from Niall Morley and Paddy O’Rourke left just one between the sides at half time. Half-time: St. Pats 1-06, Skryne 0-08.

Skryne leveled matters in the opening minute of the second half when Paddy O’Rourke stroked over a 45. Pats ramped up the pressure and added five points without a reply. James Hegarty got his second point of the game but this was quickly cancelled out by another Pats effort. The game looked to be getting away from Skryne, but they won a free out around the Pats 40 yard line. The referee brought the ball forward due to a Pats indiscretion. Paddy O’Rourke caught the Pats lads by surprise when he opted to shoot for goal rather than take the easy point. O’Rourke blasted an unstoppable shot past the stunned defenders who had lined the goal. Ciaran Lenehan followed this with a fine point to again leave just one between the teams. Pats added another point before Eoin Smyth stepped up scoring his first point of the game. Pats replied again before Eoin Smyth rattled the onion bag again for Skryne to see Skryne edge ahead by one. Skryne finished off strongly scoring four more points to a single for Pats to run out winners on a score line of St. Pats 1-15, Skryne 2-16.
