Donaghmore/Ashbourne demolish Skryne in Round 1 of Feis Cup
Skryne 0-05, Donaghmore/Ashbourne 3-13
Skryne played host to Donaghmore/Ashbourne in Round 1 of the Feis Cup in Skryne this evening. It was a perfect evening for football but only one team seemed up for the challenge. Donaghmore/Ashbourne were on the attack straight from the off and registered their first score inside the first minute with a free from their number 7. Skryne labored in their efforts to get the ball forward and were wasteful when their limited opportunities presented themselves, while Andrew Tormey tormented the Skryne defence all through the game opening his account with a goal and 2 points between the 7th and 9th minutes. Donaghmore/Ashbourne added further points from frees on the 10th and 13th minutes to stretch their lead to 1-05 to no score. Tormey scored the point of the game on the 19th minute with a peach of a strike from the outside of his boot after turning his man out near the right hand sideline. With Paddy O’Rourke and Harry Rooney unavailable for selection, Skryne were dealt another blow on 20 minutes when hardworking midfielder Donie Ryan received a Black Card. Donaghmore/Ashbourne finished the half off with 2 further points, both from frees and Skryne amazingly could not muster up a single score in the opening half against the well organised Donaghmore/Ashbourne side. Half-time score was 0-00 to 1-08.
Tormey who finished the game with a personal tally of 2-08, continued where he left off at the start of the second half when he bagged the first score of the half with a free. Skryne finally got off the mark, when first half substitute Niall Morley got on the end of a good Skryne move and took his point well. Skryne doubled their tally 2 minutes later, when Mark Jordan who was one of Skryne’s best performers on the night, popped up in Skryne’s attack and slotted the ball over the bar. Things were looking up for Skryne, but Tormey dismissed any hope of a revival when the ball fell to him inside the Skryne penalty area and he lashed it into the back of the Skryne net. Stephen O’ Brien another of Skryne’s better performers got his name on the scoresheet after 9 minutes, before Tormey converted a superb 45 from the ground. Ciarán Lenihan and then Bryan Davis added to Skryne’s tally midway through the half, but these scores were cancelled out by another point from Tormey and 1 from corner-forward Dylan Brady. Brady was on hand to punish the Skryne defence on 27 minutes when he picked up a loose pass and sent it past the stranded Ian Gillett to get Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s third goal on 27 minutes. Mercifully, referee Colm McManus played no added time at the end of this one-sided affair. Final score was Skryne 0-05 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 3-13.
Skryne will face Donaghmore/Ashbourne again in the League this Sunday and will be hoping for a massive improvement on tonight’s performance.
