Senchalstown 1 – 10
Skryne 0 – 12
With time up on the clock Skryne thought they had both points, in this A league Div 1 match played under lights in Skryne, when Senchalstown were awarded a very late controversial penalty and stole the spoils on the night. Skryne were two points ahead after substitute Niall Burke kicked his second point of the night. From the kick-out the ball was won in the middle of the field by Senchalstown’s Damien Sheridan and delivered long into the Skryne penalty area. Skryne thought the referee Joey Curley blew for a free out after a blatant push-in-the-back on their full back, but instead the Moynalty man pointed the penalty spot and the resultant kick from Brian Sheridan was blasted to the back of the net.
Senchalstown were the stronger in the first half and went in at half time 0- 7 to 0 – 4 up, but should have been more in front given the amount of good possession they had. Skryne made two changes at half time introducing Brian Davis and Ronan McCabe and after points from Kevin O’Reilly (2) Paddy Fox and Mark Battersby they back level by the 40th minute at 0 – 8 each. Both teams traded points and with 52 minutes gone they were level again on 0 – 10. Skryne had control of the game at this stage and should have pushed on for a win. However, they thought they had the game won after Niall Burke scored the second of his points with time virtually up.
While no doubt Skryne will be very disappointed with the nature of this defeat they can take much comfort from the fact that they played very well in the second half and much of this was down to the contribution made by a number of last year’s minors.
