B League Division 1 – Round 7

Skryne came from behind to win this B League Div. 1 match played in ideal conditions in Summerhill this evening (Saturday).

Summerhill started the match in whirlwind fashion and had 1-2 on the board before Skryne realised the game was on. During those hectic first five minutes it looked like Skryne were in trouble but then points from Paddy Carpenter and Craig Nolan followed by a superb goal from Paddy Fox brought them level. The Hill forged ahead again after seventeen minutes but Paddy Fox then added another point and the teams were level again.

On twenty minutes disaster struck for Skryne as two defensive mistakes led to two Summerhill goals and they kept that margin right up to half time when they led by six points. Halftime: Summerhill 3-5 Skryne 1-5.

Whatever was said at halftime got Skryne fired up and they were much the better team throughout the second half. This, despite losing two of their fullback line to injury as both Jack Dardis and Barry Clarke were forced off. Adding to the problems was another injury, as Paddy Fox who had a great first half was also forced off. These setbacks seemed to strengthen Skryne’s resolve as they powered forward.

The first score of this half was another superb Skryne goal, this time from the impressive Darren Fox who blasted the ball to the net after some great teamwork from the Blues. The introduction of two of the older ‘heads’ Allan Carty and Felim O’Rourke had a major influence on the result from there to the end. These two ‘youngsters’ scored six points between them in the last 20 minutes while the solid Skryne defence kept the Summerhill forwards to a miserly 3 points for the whole second half. Two other experienced men Aidan Tuite and David McGoldrick kept control right through the middle of the field and got great help from Dermot Brennan and Tommy Carpenter.
