Simonstown edge out Skryne
Skryne 2-08 Simonstown Gaels 3-09
B League Division 1 – Round 7
On a lovely sunny evening but on a bone hard pitch both teams served up some good football with the result in doubt right up to the final whistle. Skryne began the match impressively and were in front through a well worked Niall Morley goal after ten minutes. Ian Davis then took over the scoring mantel and added another goal and two points before half time. The Blues led at the break by 2-3 to 0-3 and were good value for their lead.

Skryne also began the second half well and increased their lead to eight points early on but Simonstown’s first score of this half was was a goal which brought them right back into the game. The Navan side added a second goal midway through this period and from then to the end of the match it was point for point. In injury time at the end of the game Simonstown were a point up with Skryne putting them under serious pressure as they tried manfully for an equaliser. Unfortunately for them, due to impressive defending by the opposition and some wayward shooting they were unable to get on level terms. They were then caught by a sucker punch as Simonstown got their 3rd goal with the very last play of the game to give them a victory they barely deserved.
David Carroll, Darren Fox and Ronan McCabe held the Skryne defence together for most of the match while the two Colms – Doherty and Craigie – broke even with a strong Simonstown midfield. Up front apart from some wayward shooting from all six, Ian Davis, Aidan Tuite, Jason Reddy and Frank Carty did particularly well. Ironically all of Skryne’s scores came from play and as already stated with some better accuracy they could have got something from the game.
