Skryne fall short despite battling second half performance
Wolfe Tones 1-11 Skryne 1-09
B League Division 1 – Round 5
Skryne and Wolfe Tones were met with torrential rain when they stepped onto the pitch at Pairc Mhic Eoin this evening which made conditions very slippery underfoot as the match commenced. The tide certainly seemed to be flowing in Wolfe Tones direction as they racked up 1-05 to 0-01 in the opening half. Skryne’s man of the match James Hegarty registered Skryne’s solitary point with a free on the 24th minute. Skryne had huffed and puffed throughout the half and while they had their chances, many of their shots fell short into the grateful hands of the Tones keeper. Meanwhile Wolfe Tones were much more accurate with their efforts, topping it off with an excellent goal on the 18th minute when their left half back carried the ball from his own half into Skryne territory, weaving his way past the Skryne defence before unleashing a fine shot past Skryne keeper Felim O’ Rourke into the far corner of the net. Half-time: Wolfe Tones 1-05, Skryne 0-01.

Skryne had a mountain to climb in the second half and they set about this task with admirable determination lead by James Hegarty who racked up an impressive tally of 0-06. Wolfe Tones added another point to their tally while Skryne popped over 3 early points, 2 from Hegarty and 1 from Allan Carty before half-time substitute Darren Fox picked up a break in front of the Wolfe Tones goal and slotted an excellent shot low past the keeper into the bottom right corner of the net. Wolfe Tones responded immediately with 2 quick fire points to undo all Skryne’s good work. However, Skryne stepped it up again and hit 4 points in a row to level the match as the game entered the closing stages. Unfortunately for Skryne Wolfe Tones did not lie down and finished strongly with 2 points in the last 5 minutes. They also had a penalty saved by Felim O’Rourke who ensured that Skryne still had a chance to rescue a result. However, Wolfe Tones stood firm and held on until the final whistle blew to secure the victory. Full-time Wolfe Tones 1-11, Skryne 1-09.
