Easy for Skryne in Stamullin
St. Patricks 2-02 Skryne 2-19
B League Division 1 – Round 1
Skryne’s reserve team travelled to Stamullin this evening for their first outing in this year’s B League Division 1 where they faced St. Pats on a cold, wet and breezy night.
Skryne kicked off with the opening score, a point from the boot of Ian Davis. Pats hit back immediately winning the kickout from Davis’s point and sending the ball direct to their full forward who found some space and blasted the ball to the back of the net. Niall Morley got on the scoresheet with a point before Pats tagged on another point to extend their lead to 2. However, Skryne took control of the game from then on knocking over 11 more points in the first half (9 from play) with Conor O’Brien, who bagged 5 points in the first half and Ian Davis in particular tormenting the Pat’s defence. Pats found it hard to get good ball to their forwards with Skryne looking the hungrier throughout. However, they had their chances to peg Skryne back late in the first half when their centre-forward and full-forward both squandered good goal chances which were blasted narrowly wide on both occasions. However, a goal on either occasion would have flattered Pats who struggled to match Skryne throughout the game. Pats did grab a late point on the stroke of half-time after a goal bound effort was well saved by Des McAviney. The rebound appeared to be lifted clean off the ground by the Pats man who tapped over. The half-time score was St. Pats 1-2, Skryne 0-13.

Skryne extended their lead with 2 early points in the second half from Davis and Kesha Reilly. Pats had their best spell of the game early in the second half but struggled to take advantage as they hit 4 wides in a row. They finally reaped a reward for this early pressure when a high ball into the square was palmed to the net for their second goal of the game. Pats would have hoped that this goal was the start of a comeback. However, Skryne had other ideas with Niall Morley getting his third point of the game before Ian Davis put the game to bed with 2 goals in as many minutes midway through the half, the first stemming from good build up play from Michael Doherty and Niall Morley, the latter putting Davis through on goal for an easy finish past the hapless Pats keeper. The second arrived within 2 minutes when Davis again found himself free in front of goal and finished with a soccer style side footed effort low past the keeper. Davis added another point from a free before the Skryne Management decided to introduce some fresh legs with Frank Carty, Colm Doherty and Ciarán Finnerty all entering the fray. Ian Davis had a glorious chance to get a hat-trick of goals but he was denied in his last action of what was a fine performance before he was replaced by veteran and club legend Vinny Reilly. Skryne finished off the scoring with 2 from the boot of Ciarán Finnerty. Full time: St.Pats 2-02, Skryne 2-19.
The Skryne Management can be satisfied with a good evening’s work from this Skryne team who dominated all over the pitch for most of the game. Some of these players will be back in action on Monday evening as the third team face Castletown in the opening game of their B League Division 2 campaign. This is a repeat of last year’s Division 3 final where Skryne without a number of regulars lost out despite a brave effort.
