Skryne on Top in Close Match
Wolfe Tones 0-12 Skryne 1-10
A League Division 1 – Round 9
After a dour tense struggle Skryne came out on top of this A League Div 1 match versus Wolfe Tones in Kilberry last evening (Saturday). On a dry evening the crossfield breeze made scoring difficult for both teams with Skryne shooting 13 wides to the Tones 9.
Skryne had the better of the early exchanges and should have been ahead as early as the first minute when Bryan Davis’s shot was signaled wide to the dismay of the supporters who were convinced it was a good score. Despite this the Blues continued to press forward and were rewarded on seven minutes when Paddy O’Rourke was hauled down in the big square and Referee David Coldrick pointed to the spot. Rourkey dusted himself down and calmly planted an unstoppable shot to the Tones net to give Skryne a lead they never relinquished. He added a point from a forty five and Bryan Davis made up for the earlier disappointment with two great points while Ronan McCabe powered forward for another great score. Conor O’Brien finished a good Skryne move to complete the first half scoring leaving things at half time Skryne 1-5 Wolfe Tones 0-5.

The second half began with Wolfe Tones playing away from the Pavilion end and very much on the front foot as they quickly hit three points to draw level. It was in this period that the Skryne men left their shooting boots at home and they kicked four bad wides from good scoring positions. Captain Paddy O’Rourke settled Skryne again with three pointed frees and Mark Battersby had a good second half adding two valuable points.
Another hotly disputed incident occurred midway through this half when a Skryne line ball was wrongly awarded to Wolfe Tones and Cian Ward gladly accepted the gift and accurately pointed. It’s on decisions like this that important close games can be decided.
As stated the scorers did their part for Skryne in this win but defensively the Blues had the measure of a very competent Tones forward line with Stephen O’Brien and Declan Morley particularly impressive. In midfield Harry Rooney got good help from David McGoldrick and later in the game from Colm Craigie.
