Goals galore in Skryne
Skryne 5-11 St. Colmcilles 2-10
Skryne got back to winning ways in the second round of the A League with this victory over St. Colmcilles in Skryne on Saturday night. The very heavy pitch made good football difficult and even though the rain stayed away the bitter cold added to the problems for both players and spectators. There was no wind advantage for either side and Skryne playing towards the scoreboard end began the game determined to eradicate the effects of their first round defeat last weekend. They had 2-4 on the scoreboard before St. Colmcilles registered their first score – a goal – after 20 minutes. The Blues went on to lead at the break by 3-6 to 1-1 with the goals coming as a result of some excellent build up play scored by Stephen O’Brien, Mark Battersby and Conor O’Brien.
The second half began in the same vein as the first and Skryne added 2 more scores to lead by 13 points and the Seasiders seemed to be dead and buried as far as the result of this game was concerned. To their credit they rallied gamely and after swapping goals with Conor O’Briens second major they went on a scoring spree of their own adding 8 points without reply. Paddy Fox’s goal settled Skryne and they finished the game well with 2 points from the excellent O’Brien and one from substitute Niall Morley.
A feature of the game was the battle between present County player Graham Reilly – who scored some lovely points – and former County player Ciaran Lenehan with the honours shared although ‘Biggy’ showed his class when his team were under severe pressure and ‘Lenny’ organised his defence much better than they showed in their first match.
This was a much better team performance from Skryne and therefore unnecessary to name individuals who played well. It meant the backroom team could use their allocation of six substitutions for a different reason than in last weeks debacle.
Skryne – Ian Gillett. Niall Lenehan, Mark Harrington, Mark Jordan. Tomás McKeown, Ciaran Lenehan, Stephen O’Brien (1-0). Aidan Tuite, Harry Rooney. Neal Burke, Conor O’Brien (2-2), Bryan Davis (0-1). Paddy Fox (1-0), Mark Battersby (1-6), Jason Fox (0-1).
Subs used – Donie Ryan, Eoghan Greene, Kevin O’Reilly, Declan Morley, Niall Morley (0-1) and John Morley.
