Skryne put O’Mahonys to the sword
Navan O’ Mahonys 0-10 Skryne 1-14
A League Division 1 – Round 2
The pitch at Paddy O’Brien Park was deemed unplayable this morning and so O’Mahonys were forced to travel to the green pastures of Skryne to play their Round 2 ‘Home’ game, where an early morning pitch inspection confirmed that the Skryne pitch was good to go.
Skryne were unfortunate to lose Ciarán Lenehan to injury during the pre-match warm-up and Michael Doherty was drafted in as a replacement alongside Harry Rooney in the Skryne midfield. O’Mahonys played like the home team in the early stages of the game as they raced into a four points to zero lead by the tenth minute. Skryne took a bit of time to settle, but two pointed frees from Paddy O’Rourke steadied their nerves. Two further points from O’Mahonys each side of a Darragh Campion single made it six points to three half way through the opening period. Skryne dominated the remainder of the half bagging four points in a row, one each from the Davis brothers and two frees from the boot of Paddy O’Rourke. Skryne were unlucky not to extend their lead as Darragh Campion cracked a rasper of a shot off the O’Mahony’s crossbar on the stroke of half-time. Half-time score: Navan O’Mahonys 0-06, Skryne 0-07.

Skryne were quick out of the blocks in the second half with a point inside the first minute from the impressive Darragh Campion. This was quickly followed up with another Paddy O’Rourke free following a foul on Conor O’Brien. O’Mahonys pulled one back with a point from their centre forward. From the kickout Skryne moved the ball up the field and Conor O’Brien found Paddy O’Rourke with a pinpoint pass at the edge of the large square. O’Rourke fired a low shot goalward but the O’Mahonys keeper was equal to it and deflected it away to safety. O’Rourke fired over a 45 for Skryne in the tenth minute before following it up a minute later with a free from even further out. Colm Craigie who came on for Harry Rooney at half-time added to Skryne’s tally. A minute later, Eoin Smyth saw his goal bound shot blocked away by the O’Mahonys rearguard. The ball fell to Jason Fox who made no mistake as he grabbed the only goal of the game to send Skryne into a commanding lead of 1-12 to 0-07 midway through the half. Skryne were purring at this stage and Paddy O’Rourke scored a monster of a point from out near the sideline to extend Skryne’s lead. Skryne’s next and final score was a fantastic free flowing move which started with a Robbie Clarke interception deep in Skryne’s half. The ball was moved quickly up the pitch via Eoin Smyth and Paddy Carpenter before Jayo Fox stroked the ball over. O’Mahonys showed some fight in the latter stages of the second half as they chipped away at Skryne’s lead. Two pointed frees reduced the deficit to eight, but it was goals they needed. Skryne’s defence dug in and Donie Ryan in particular was immense. O’Mahonys seemed certain to get the goal they craved on 28 minutes but a goal bound effort was deflected over by the boot of Eoghan Greene as Skryne threw bodies in the way. Another effort on goal was expertly tipped away by Ian Gillett in the Skryne goal as Skryne held firm. The final whistle sounded and Skryne got the victory they deserved. Final score: Navan O’ Mahonys 0-10, Skryne 1-14.
