Skryne beaten by determined O’Mahonys
Skryne 0-12 Navan O’Mahonys 2-14
A League Division 1 – Round 13
Skryne had secured their Division 1 status with their victory over Moynalvey in Round 12 and so entered this game with nothing to play for. O’Mahonys on the other hand knew that a win would secure an A League final spot after a very successful League campaign. And so when the ball was thrown in, O’Mahonys launched assault after assault on the Skryne rearguard with Oisín O’Brien leading the onslaught. Indeed O’ Mahonys had 7 points on the board with only 11 minutes on the clock. 2 pointed frees from Skryne followed before Oisín O’Brien hit the back of the Skryne net after been put through by Alan Forde. O’Mahonys could have had more goals if it weren’t for the heroices of Skryne goalkeeper Ian Gillett who kept Skryne in it with some fine point blank saves from O’Brien again and David Bray. O’ Mahonys added another 2 points to their first half tally with a single response from Paddy O’Rourke on the twentieth minute. As the game entered the final minute of the half Skryne managed to add 2 more points which took the bare look off the Skryne tally and reduced the half-time deficit to Skryne 0-05, Navan O’Mahonys 1-09.

Skryne were a different team in the third quarter and quickly set about reducing the O’Mahonys lead. A pointed free followed by a 45 from Paddy O’Rourke set the ball rolling. Mark Battersby then weighed in with a point, before a Paddy O’Rourke brace saw Skryne edge closer. Mark Battersby was on target again to reduce the deficit to a single point. O’Mahonys were denied again by Ian Gillett who was excellent all night in the Skryne goal. The follow-up shot was brilliantly kept out by Stephen O’Brien. Paddy O’Rourke almost drew Skryne level but his free kick missed the target. O’Mahonys who had not scored for the opening 17 minutes of the half finally broke their duck and fired over a two points to extend their lead to 3. O’Mahonys hit their second goal of the game in the twenty second minute of the half. Jason Fox pulled back a point a minute later. Skryne did try to reduce the gap further but several wides left the O’Mahonys men comfortable as they coasted to victory in the last few minutes hitting 3 further points to add gloss to the scoreboard.
