Skryne Show Grit and Determination to Overcome Kilanerin of Wexford
On Saturday, October 18th, Skryne Intermediate Ladies welcomed Kilanerin of Wexford to Skryne for the second round of the Intermediate Leinster Ladies Championship. In a game that was tightly contested from start to finish, Skryne dug deep to secure a hard-earned 1-9 to 1-7 victory.
From the outset, it was clear this would be a very different battle to the opening round. Skryne showed great composure and work rate, matching Kilanerin in every sector of the field and responding to every challenge.
In goals, Colleen Jordan was a steady presence throughout, dealing calmly with high balls and organising her defence with authority.
The defensive unit of Ciara Cowley, Niamh Cowley, Ailish Lenehan, Kate Gibbons, Lizzie Moreland, Aisling O’Connor, and Niamh O’Brien had a huge task on their hands against a lively Kilanerin forward line. They were outstanding — making crucial interceptions, strong tackles, and turning defence into attack with excellent distribution.
At midfield, Catriona Keoghan and Áine Keogh worked tirelessly all afternoon. They covered an incredible amount of ground, won vital kickouts, and drove the team forward at key moments. One of the standout moments came in the first half when Áine made a brilliant solo run from midfield and finished superbly to level the game at 1-3 apiece, lifting the entire team.
Up front, Fiona O’Rourke, Ciara Smyth, Róisín McManus, Ellie Murphy, and Amy O’Dowd showed real determination and sharpness. Ciara Smyth struck for a crucial goal, Róisín McManus added three fine points from play, and Ellie Murphy showed great composure to slot over three frees. Catriona Keoghan landed a brilliant score from a difficult angle, Fiona O’Rourke clipped over an important point, and Áine’s first-half score was a key moment in swinging momentum Skryne’s way.
Rachel O’Dowd entered the action in the second half, bringing fresh energy to the defence and playing her part in keeping Kilanerin at bay in the closing stages.
Skryne went in at the break with a narrow 1-6 to 1-3 lead, but Kilanerin pushed hard after the restart. It was Skryne’s work rate, organisation, and collective determination that saw them over the line. Every player played their part, defending as a unit and attacking with purpose when chances came.
This was a tough, physical championship battle and Skryne showed their character and resilience to claim a deserved win.
