Final Score: Skryne 5-16 | Simonstown 0-11
Venue: Skryne GFC | Date: Thursday, August 14th

Skryne delivered a commanding performance against Simonstown, securing a comprehensive 5-16 to 0-10 victory with a display built on teamwork, work rate, and clinical finishing. With every player contributing across the pitch, it was a statement win from a well-drilled Skryne side.

The game began with Ciara Smyth making an early impact, splitting the posts with a superb point from a tight angle. She quickly added another to set the tone for a dominant first half. Down the right wing, Aisling O’Connor and Ciara Cowley combined brilliantly, stretching the Simonstown defence and creating space for the forwards.

The foundation was laid early by strong defensive work. Lizzy Morland set the tone with an early interception, and Ailish Lenehan followed suit with smart positioning and timely clearances — including a crucial one after the ball rebounded off the crossbar. Abbye Donnelly also produced a standout interception, disrupting Simonstown’s rhythm. Kate Gibbons was solid in defence throughout, putting in a composed and reliable performance at the back.

One of the highlights of the first half came from a well-worked team move: Colleen Jordan’s accurate kick-out found Ellie Murphy, who linked up with Ciara Cowley and Róisín McManus, culminating in a composed finish from Ciara Smyth to the back of the net. Shortly after, Abbye Donnelly won another kick-out and earned a free which Ellie converted with confidence.

Catriona Keoghan, playing in midfield alongside Aine Keogh, delivered a composed and powerful performance, dominating possession and contributing both defensively and offensively. Catriona made a vital interception and block, while Aine was instrumental in transition play and consistently won possession around the middle.

Róisín McManus added to her earlier point with a well-taken goal after a sustained attacking move, showcasing her sharp movement and finishing ability. Fiona O’Rourke, linking defence and attack, played a key role – including one sequence where she found Rachel O’Dowd inside, who fought to retain possession and returned it to Fiona for a well-deserved point. Rachel was making her championship debut and put in a confident and hard-working performance in the forward line. Niamh Cowley also stood tall in defence with a crucial block, ensuring Skryne stayed in control.

Abbye Donnelly capped off a fine half by slotting home a goal after excellent interplay between Ciara Cowley and Ellie Murphy. Fiona O’Rourke later delivered a perfect pass to Ciara Smyth for her second goal, sending Skryne into the break 3-5 to 0-4 ahead.

The second half saw no drop in intensity. Lizzy Morland got on the scoreboard with a fine point, and Catriona Keoghan added another from distance after winning a kick-out. Ciara Smyth, in electric form, added more points and eventually sealed her hat-trick with a clinical goal. Aine Keogh capped a strong midfield performance with a well-earned point after a flowing move involving Fiona and Ellie.

Róisín McManus continued to shine up front, adding points to her tally, while Abbye Donnelly and Ellie Murphy kept the scoreboard ticking with impressive efforts. Ellie’s point followed a precise delivery from Aine Keogh, showing the link-up play that defined Skryne’s performance.

Skryne’s bench made an immediate impact. Niamh O’Brien replaced Kate Gibbons and linked up with Ciara Smyth for a point shortly after. Alana Cooney entered for Rachel O’Dowd, Ciara Maguire came on for Ellie Murphy, and both were heavily involved. Hannah Dardis replaced Lizzy Morland, and Sarah Pentony came on for Fiona O’Rourke, helping maintain Skryne’s dominance to the final whistle.

Ciara Smyth rounded off her performance with another point and her third goal, capping an outstanding outing for both herself and the team.

A powerful and polished team display from Skryne, with every player playing their part in a thoroughly deserved win.
