Skryne Ladies Crowned Division 2 League Champions with Impressive Win Over St. Ultans

Final Score: Skryne 0-16 | St. Ultans 2-4
Venue: Skryne GFC | Date: Saturday, May 24

Skryne Ladies delivered a superb team performance to claim the Division 2 League title, overcoming St. Ultans with a dominant display of skill, determination, and teamwork in front of a home crowd in Skryne GFC.  From the throw-in, Skryne set the pace, showing confidence in possession and composure in front of the posts. Despite two second-half goals from St. Ultans, the home side’s accuracy and work rate ensured they remained in control throughout.

Ellie Murphy and Amy O’Dowd opened the scoring with well-taken points. This was followed by excellent efforts from Róisín McManus and Sarah Pentony who chipped in with a point apiece. Ciara Smyth, who was a constant threat in the half forward line also got on the score board with a well taken point. Goalkeeper Colleen Jordan pulled off a brilliant save early on and delivered consistently sharp kickouts throughout the game. The Skryne defence stood tall, with Ciara Cowley and Ailish Lennahan marking tightly and Niamh Cowley and Catriona Keoghan executing key blocks to stifle St. Ultans’ attacks and the team went into the break with a 0-7 to 0-4 advantage.

Skryne extended their lead in the second half, hitting nine more points, with their only concession being two late goals from the visitors. The forward line continued to impress, and the work rate of the half forwards—particularly Ciara Smyth—was instrumental. Smyth finished with 0-6, capping a standout individual performance that included clever movement, accurate shooting, and tireless tracking.

Amy O’Dowd also had a superb performance, finishing with 0-4 and playing a central role in Skryne’s attacking play. Ellie Murphy matched that tally with 0-4, including two from frees. Laura Mangan played a key role in the full forward line, winning great ball and providing a strong outlet up front; her link-up play and physical presence were instrumental in Skryne’s forward momentum. Fiona O’Rourke put in a tireless shift, covering every blade of grass and contributing significantly to both attack and defence with her excellent work rate across the field. Substitutes Alannah Cooney, Rachel O’Dowd, and Aine Keogh all made notable contributions, with Rachel providing the assist for a late Smyth score.

Captain Lizzy Moreland led by example, producing crucial interceptions and anchoring the defence with confidence. Kate Gibbons and Aisling O’Connor put in a relentless shift around the middle, while Catriona Keoghan’s energy and two vital blocks underlined her influence.

Congratulations to the players and their management team—Ronan Loftus, Martin Kennedy, Vinny Naughton, and Teresa Mangan—on a memorable league campaign.
