Narrow loss for Skryne in final round of Feis Cup
An Scrín 3-08, Gaeil Colmcille 3-09
J.M.B. Sportsfields Feis Cup – Group B, Round 3
Skryne played their final game in this year’s Feis Cup in a bright sunny Fr. McManus Park yesterday at noon against Gaeil Colmcille. The Kellsmen won the throwin and launched the first attack of the day which yielded a penalty inside the opening minute. Brian Hanlon made no mistake with the spot-kick sending it to the right bottom corner of the net. Points from Liam Fergusen and Seamus Mattimoe extended their lead. Brian Hanlon forced an excellent save from Cian Donohoe shortly after the quarter hour mark after he received a pass in front of the Skryne goal and drove a shot that was arrowing towards the right hand side of the goal. Donohoe was equal to it and dived low to palm the ball away to safety. Skryne who had been guilty of some early missed opportunities, hit their opening score 20 minutes into the game. Neil Burke tapped over a free before launching a two pointer free over the black spot to bring Skryne back into the game. The two pointer came after some excellent defending from the Skryne rear-guard when they overturned possession in their own half winning a free in the process. When Gaeil Colmcille prevented the free from been taken quickly, the referee brought the ball forward and Burkey took the two point option. Points from Oisín Keogh and Billy Smyth each side of a point from Brian Hanlon left just a point between the sides with half-time approaching. Mark Swan who had been marauding up the left wing throughout the first half, hit a high left-footed shot towards the Gaeil Colmcille goal which flew into the top-right corner of the net to see Skryne take the lead for the first time in the game on the stroke of half-time. Half-time: An Scrín 1-05, Gaeil Colmcille 1-03.
Two Brian Hanlon goals inside the first five minutes of the second half saw Gaeil Colmcille take the initiative. Skryne converted another free before Liam Fergusen drove over a two-pointer to leave five points between the sides 10 minutes into the half. Refusing to back down, Skryne clawed their way back with a well-taken goal from Billy Smyth, reducing the deficit to just two points. Midway through the half, Skryne introduced four substitutes, including senior debutants Conor Reuter, Stephen Corry, and Liam Donohoe, all of whom made positive contributions.
Gaeil Colmcille maintained their grip on the game adding a further four points to Skryne’s single point to move five points ahead with five minutes remaining. Skryne didn’t give up and laid siege to the Gaeil Colmcille goal. Neil Burke slotted over a point before Skryne won a free 30 metres out on the right-hand side. Burkey launched a high-ball into the square which found the back of the Gaeil Colmcille net to leave just a single point between the sides. Despite Skryne’s efforts, the final whistle blew and the Kellsmen held out to take all 2 points and secure their second victory of the campaign.
