In a dramatic turnaround from their midfield performance Skryne took both points against Donaghmore Ashbourne in the A league Div one match played at Ashbourne on Saturday evening. Playing with the aid of a moderate breeze in the first half Mark Battersby was first to raise a whit flag after only two minutes. However with five minutes of play gone, a mix-up in Skryne backline allowed the home side in for soccer style goal when the ball was passed along the ground and finally blasted past a helpless Paul McGoldrick in the Skryne goals. Skryne however were not daunted by this slip and points from David Ryan, Brian Davis, Mark Battersby and Conor O’Brien had them five points to a goal up by the seventeenth minute. Then Ian Davis won a high ball at midfield and made good ground before passing to David Ryan who had gotten in behind the full back line to shoot a fine goal and leave the score at Skryne 1 – 5, Donaghmore Ashbourne 1 – 0. Skryne were now in the driving seat and David McGoldrick added another from a free before Don/Ash got their second score, a point, on 26 minutes. However, Skryne finished out the half with another point from Brian Davis to leave the half-time score at Skryne 1 – 7 Donaghmore Ashbourne 1 – 1.
The second half opened with two quick points from the home side in the thirty first minute but Paddy Fox pulled one back for the visitors a minute later. Don/Ash, now playing with the aid of the breeze, posted four points in an eight minute period between the thirty-fourth and forty-second minute to make it just a one point game. Paddy Fox again pointed for Skryne to leave two points between the teams with a quarter of the game left to play. However when a high ball into the Skryne goalmouth, which should have been cleared, fell into the back of the net Don/Ash led by a point for the first time in the game on a score-line of 2 – 7 to 1 – 9. Both sides now pressed hard for to claim the points. Donaggmore Ashbourn probably had the lion’s share of chances but dogged defence from the Skryne backs particularly Niall Lenehan at corner back, ensured that there were no easy shots at goal. On the other hand Skryne hit two more points from David McGoldrick and Paddy Fox to finish the game with just one point to spare.
