Dunshaughlin condemn Skryne to a second Premier Division 1 defeat
Skryne 1-08 Dunshaughlin 0-16
Premier Football Championship Division 1, Group B – Round 2.
Skryne were somewhat unlucky to lose their Round 1 tie to Gaeil Colmcille. However, they met a strong young Dunshaughlin team in Skryne yesterday morning who had too much firepower for the boys in blue and never looked in danger of losing this game.
On a beautiful sunny morning in Skryne it was the Taramen who started the brightest with their first attack when Neil Burke hit a sweet pass to Mark Harrington who had stolen in behind the Dunshaughlin full-back line. Harro danced around a Dunshaughlin defender like Michael Flately before blasting to the net to give Skryne an early lead. Skryne continued to press after the goal but sent three pointed efforts wide. Dunshaughlin’s Seán O’Neill opened their scoring in the tenth minute and then Dunshaughlin added five points without a reply as they settled into the game. Skryne then hit a trio of points, two from Ian Davis and the third from Mark Swan. Ian Davis’s first came when Kian Reddy sent a ball into Mark Harrington. Harro offloaded to Davis who fired over from 30 metres out. His second came after he made a run in along the left-hand side endline before fisting across the face of the goal towards Jason Reddy. The ball was just too high for Reddy but it was deflected back to Davis who turned and shot over with his left foot. Mark Swan added his point with a fine shot from the 40 metre line to split the posts and level the game. Mark Devaney edged Dunshaughlin ahead again before Neil Burke converted a free for Skryne. Dunshaughlin added two more points, a free from Cathal McCormack and then an injury-time point from David Fildes to secure a two-point half-time lead. Skryne 1-4, Dunshaughlin 0-9.
Dunshaughlin opened the scoring inside the first minute in the second half with Conor Jennings firing over. The impressive Colm Keane added another a minute later before Neil Burke sent over Skryne’s opening score of the half, a pointed free. Dunshaughlin added two more points before Jason Reddy hit the point of the day after receiving the ball from brother Kian. Jayo hit a shot from the 40 with the outside of his boot and it sailed over the black spot to leave four points between the sides. Cathal McCormack added another for Dunshaughlin before Niall Morland galloped forward and took a shot at the goal which was deflected away by a Dunshaughlin defender. Kian Reddy picked up the rebound and popped the ball over. Skryne fought hard to try and reduce the deficit but Dunshaughlin added two more points to Skryne’s one, an injury time point from Jason Reddy to secure a five-point victory. Skryne 1-08, Dunshaughlin 0-16
Dunshaughlin were impressive going forward, but Skryne’s defence fought hard throughout with Timmy Lennon and Dermot Brennan in particular the standout players for Skryne on the day.
Skryne will face Donaghmore/Ashbourne in their last group game.
