Skryne secure comfortable victory in Summerhill

Premier Football Championship. Division 5 – Round 4.

After a dramatic finale in Round 3 which saw Skryne grab a last gasp goal to secure a draw, tonight’s game was much more comfortable as Skryne eased to a ten point victory over traditionally tough opponents Summerhill.

Skryne arrived in Summerhill with a strong squad for this evening’s game, a mixture of the young pretenders and a good sprinkling of former Senior players who may have lost a little pace but still possess the same skill and drive. Felim O’Rourke and Ronan McCabe got the scoring underway for Skryne with two early points, before Summerhill pounced for a goal with only five minutes on the clock when wing half forward Brian Rispin lobbed a ball into the Skryne penalty area and corner forward Timmy O’Connell got a fist to the ball to direct it over and out of the reach of Skryne keeper James Keane into the back of the net. Jeremy Ennis added a point for Summerhill, but Skryne began to exert their control from then on and hit three points in a row, all from play to lead by a point at the first half water break. Summerhill 1-01, Skryne 0-05.

Skryne increased their lead in the second quarter when Aidan Gill hit two points in a row before Felim O’Rourke slipped a perfect pass to Cian Reddy in front of goals. Reddy slid the ball under Summerhill keeper Gary Gill for Skryne’s opening goal. Adam Larkin pulled a point back for Summerhill. Two further points from each side saw the teams finish the half on a scoreline of Summerhill 1-04, Skryne 1-09.

Summerhill started off brightly in the second half with two early points to reduce the deficit to just three points. However, this was as close as they got as Skryne took the game by the scruff of the neck and began to pull away. Aidan Gill grabbed his third point, before Skryne introduced Jason Fox who made a welcome return to GAA action today. The classy Jayo clocked up a total of five points in the second half. Seán Cassidy also swung over a beauty of a point just before the second half water break as Skryne continued to dominate. Scoreline at the water break. Summerhill 1-07, Skryne 1-14.

The final quarter began with Cian Reddy chipping over his second point, in addition to his first half goal in what was an impressive performance from the young corner forward. Brian Smyth had been introduced early in the second half and was causing full-back John Comey all sorts of problems with his physical power. Goalkeeper Gary Gill discovered this to his peril when he contested and lost possession to Smythy who swiftly swung his boot at the loose ball to send it to the back of the Summerhill net. Summerhill replied immediately with a goal of their own when they won the kickout and moved the ball quickly down the field dissecting the Skryne defence before firing to the net. Summerhill did add two more points in the closing stages, but Skryne polished off the victory with three more points, the last from Mark Harrington who found the target with his last effort having missed two earlier chances. It was a case of third time lucky for Harro who had calibrating his radar earlier in the game.

This evening’s win lifts Skryne up to third place in the table, although they have played a game more than some of the teams around them. Nevertheless, the win has given them fresh impetus and has put them right back in contention in the Division.
