LGFA U14 Football Championship. Division 3 – Round 3

Skryne U14 girls travelled to Cortown yesterday evening for their Round 3 Championship game against St. Ultans. The girls had won their opening two games against Seneschalstown and Moylagh with relative ease, but were faced with a sterner test against the girls from St. Ultans on a wet soggy evening that was far from ideal for the fast flowing football that these girls are used to playing.

Skryne dominated the first half led by captain Aisling O’Connor at midfield. With great movement and attack Laura Mangan opened Skryne’s account by fisting a goal to the back of the net.  Aoife McLoughlin hit Skryne’s second goal shortly after with a powerful strike. Skryne led 2-01 to 0-04 points at half time.

Katie Purcell kept their strong number 12 well marked and away from scoring goals but as the weather conditions deteriorated badly and the ground got heavier, this slowed the Skryne girls progress and in the third quarter St Ultans pulled the game back to level. It was a very physical game in wet and difficult conditions. Points in the last quarter from McLoughlin and Caoimhe Giles put Skryne ahead but the St Ultans girls never gave up and went down the field and scored a final point from a free, their final score of the game. But it was Katie Keane who proved  to be the hero of the day pulling off a spectacular save that a Premier League goalie would be proud of. Shauna Hogan and Beth Shanley worked tirelessly up and down the field for the entire hour. The Skryne girls showed remarkable resilience and discipline to leave them topping their league table. Final score: St. Ultans 1-06, Skryne 2-04.

The girls play Clann Na Gael in the semi-final next weekend.

Team: Katie Keane, Destiny Carty, Emily Kelly, Katie Purcell, Sìne Smyth, Shauna Hogan, Aisling O’Connor (C), Beth Shanley, Caoimhe Giles (0- 2), Laura Mangan (1-0), Aoife McLoughlin (1-1), Sarah Pentony (0-1), Àine Keogh, Megan Cowley.
