All County A League Division 1 – Round 1

Skryne hosted their opening league game against St. Peters Dunboyne this evening in a cold Fr. Mc Manus Park in front of a small crowd. Conditions were good and and the pitch had dried out remarkably well after the recent storms.

Skryne struggled in the first half with Dunboyne dominating possession. Skryne only registered one score in the entire half and rarely threatened the Dunboyne goal. Jason Reddy converted a free for Skryne on the sixth minute and that was it for the half. Dunboyne carried more forward momentum but found the Skryne defence difficult to break down with Andrew Moore and Eoghan Greene featuring well in a solid defensive display. Dunboyne fared slightly better than Skryne in the scoring stakes bagging four points in the opening half, three of these from play, but both sides lacked real penetration in attack. Half-time score: Skryne 0-01, St. Peters, Dunboyne 0-04.

Skryne stepped it up in the second half and began to win some of the battles around the pitch. The sides swapped scores in the first five minutes of the half with Jason Reddy getting his second score of the game, another free, while Dunboyne fired over another from play. Skryne were dealt a hammer blow on the 10th minute of the half when Bryan Davis was issued with a second yellow card which saw him heading for an early shower. Despite this, Skryne battled hard and reduced the deficit to a single point with points from Jason Reddy(a 45) and Patrick Fox. Dunboyne added another point to their tally before Reddy hit the point of he game when Harry Rooney superbly fielded Ian Gillett’s kickout, before slipping the ball to Reddy who fired over a fine point to leave the minimum between the teams again with only five minutes remaining. Skryne continued to press forward in search of an equaliser but Dunboyne won back possession and launched a quick counter attack. This attack looked to have been snuffed out by Eoin Smyth but for a harsh free against him for over carrying which gave Dunboyne the chance to extend their lead to 2 points. This point broke Skryne’s resolve and Dunboyne went on to add a further 1-02 in injury time. Stephen O’Brien added a solitary consolation point. The final scoreline will flatter the men from Dunboyne whose victory was not as convincing as the scoreline suggests.

Skryne will take some positives from the game. The defence was excellent for the most part. The introduction of Shane Smyth and Padraig Finnerty for their competitive debuts in the Skryne Senior team was also welcome as Skryne begin to look to the future.
