B League Defeat For Skryne
St. Colmcilles 0-15 Skryne 0-12
B League Division 1 – Round 3
This B League Division match was played in ideal conditions for good football in Pilltown and both sets of players did their best to serve it up for the small attendance.
As stated the conditions were ideal for the players but very cold for the few brave spectators and Skryne started the game on fire with some lovely scores. Tommy Carpenter got the ball rolling with a great point after two minutes and Colm Doherty added another super score from a long way out. The Blues went on to lead by 5 points to no score after 15 minutes and looked like they were in control but Cilles had other ideas and suddenly realised they had to up their game before it was too late. That’s exactly what they did and despite some beautiful free kicks from Jason Reddy for Skryne the Cilles went on to lead at half time by 0-9 to 0-7. Jason’s haul of 6 points from placed balls included 2 forty fives – one from way out on the sideline which was the best score of the game.

In the second half the teams were evenly matched and it was point for point right up to the final whistle. Skryne tried manfully to get that all important goal which would have drawn the game but the St. Colmcilles defence held firm. Skryne came close to getting that goal on two occasions but both Aidan Tuite and John Morley were unlucky to see their efforts blocked in the last hectic five minutes.
Some of the Skryne players were playing their second game in less than 24 hours and this definitely had a bearing on the result. This was a problem we encountered on numerous occasions over the last two years and certainly does not take player welfare into account.
Both teams ended with 14 players after a flare up after 15 minutes of the first half. Eoghan Greene on his eagerly awaited return from injury was unlucky to receive a second yellow card while the Colmcilles full forward got his marching orders with a straight red in the same incident. This was an isolated ‘flare up’ and the game in general was played in good spirits with great points scored by both teams.
