Table toppers Dunboyne slay Skryne
St. Peters, Dunboyne 1-15 Skryne 0-06
Junior A Football Championship, Group C – Round 6
St. Peters, Dunboyne have been the trailblazers in Group C of this year’s Junior A Football Championship, sweeping all aside with six wins out of six and nearly all victories by sizable margins. Skryne were under no illussions as they stepped onto the immaculately turned out Dunsany pitch that they were facing an uphill battle to get any result from this game. However, the final score would suggest somewhat of a walk in the park for Dunboyne, but for much of this game Skryne put up a very stubborn resistance.
Dunboyne set off at a frantic pace and had notched up 1-04 inside the first 10 minutes of the game as Skryne initially struggled to get a foothold in the game. A brilliant Timmy Lennon interception in the full back line kickstarted a Skryne attack which ended with Jason Fox registering Skryne’s opening score on the twelfth minute. Dunboyne managed only two further points in the first half while Skryne added two frees, one each for Jason Fox and Allan Carty to leave the half time score St. Peters, Dunboyne 1-06, Skryne 0-03.

Skryne almost grabbed a goal inside the first two minutes of the second half which would have brought them right back into the game. They did get two early points when Neil Burke converted after bursting inside the Dunboyne rearguard and Allan Carty slotted over a fine point to reduce the deficit to only four points. Dunboyne replied with a pointed free and another from play before Neil Burke added his second and Skryne’s final score of the game on the eleventh minute of the half. From then on, despite pressing forward in search of more scores, Skryne found it difficult to break down the Dunboyne rearguard. Meanwhile Dunboyne managed to keep Skryne at arms length by picking off some points. With five minutes remaining, Skryne trailed by 1-10 to 0-06, but Skryne’s resistance had been broken and Dunboyne racked up five unanswered points in the last five minutes to record a comfortable victory.
Skryne Juniors like their Senior counterparts will face Navan O’Mahonys in the final round of the group stage of the championship.
