It’s not often that someone stands outside the perimeter fence of a football field, is not togged out, has nothing to do with either players or officials and still manages to get the winning point in a game. However that honour goes to Eamon Giles who was directly responsible for Skryne winning the A League against Duleek Bellewstown in Bellewstown on Thursday evening. With 40 minutes of the game gone Skryne were trailing by two points when Duleek Bellewstown won a sideline kick about 45 meters from their own goal. The kicker looked around for someone to kick it to but all his team-mates were well marshalled by the Skryne men. Seeing the goalie calling for the ball Eamon advised him to “try the goalie” and the player tried a long kick back to his custodian. However he totally misfired his shot and put it out for a 45. David McGoldrick duly sent over the resultant 45 to the cheers of the small gathering of the Skryne faithful who applauded, not only the fine score, but the man who’s brilliant advice resulted in the whole set-piece. Skryne only won by a solitary point so it can justifiably be said that Eamon won the match for Skryne. Perhaps it’s time to introduce a new position to the Committee of the club. All suggestions for what this new position might be called should be sent to the Secretary before the next AGM. My suggestion is “Advisor to the Opposition” or “A/O” for short.
