Junior A Football Championship, Group C – Round 4

Skryne and Gaeil Colmcille both came into tonight’s Junior Championship match on the back of Round 3 defeats, with both teams needing a win to get their Championship campaigns back on track. Skryne opened the scoring inside the first minute with man of the match James Hegarty tapping over for the first of his six points from play. Gaeil Colmcille’s wing half forward was on target to equalise. Jason Reddy hit a brilliant point from the left hand side, a just reward after Frank Carty fought like a terrier to win possession back for Skryne in the lead up to the score. Gaeil Colmcille replied straight away with a point from their dangerous corner forward who proved a handful in more than just football matters for most of the evening and was skating on thin ice for most of the game after picking up a deserved yellow card in the first half for a closed fist tackle on his opposite number David Carroll. Dermot Brennan was fouled as he made one of his characteristic bursts forward. Allan Carty was on hand to convert the free. Aidan Tuite, who rolled back the years with fine performance showing leadership all night, plucked the kick-out out of the air and laid the ball off to Colm Doherty who made no mistake when splitting the posts for Skryne’s fourth point. Skryne faded out of the game for a fifteen minute spell where they struggled to get a hold of possession and found it hard to make the ball stick up front. Meanwhile Gaeil Colmcille tapped over two frees to level matters followed by two more from play. Skryne came back to life in the closing minutes of the half with both Niall Lenehan and Jason Reddy narrowly missing chances before starman Hedge found the target to close the gap to one. Half-time score: Skryne 0-05, Gaeil Colmcille 0-06.

Skryne kicked off the scoring in the second half with Hedge on the mark again with a fine point from the right hand side after a clever short free from Jason Reddy. Tuitey immediately won the kickout and charged forward before curling a point over with the outside of his boot while holding off a number of challenges. Skryne were unlucky not to  bag a goal on the fifth minute when a Keith Donoghue effort rebounded off the foot of the post and away to safety. A pointed free from Gaeil Colmcille on the eleventh minute saw the sides draw level once again. Gaeil Colmcille were denied a goal when Felim O’Rourke batted a goalbound effort out for a 45. The 45 was launched into the Skryne goalmouth and a scramble ensued. Skryne survived and did just enough to get the ball away to safety. A Jason Reddy free followed by an Allan Carty special gave Skryne a two point cushion. A double from the irrepressible James Hegarty gave Skryne some more breathing space. Gaeil Colmcille replied with a point from play to leave just a goal between the two sides. James Hegarty and Colm Doherty put the result beyond doubt with two points in the closing minutes of the match. Final score: Skryne 0-13, Gaeil Colmcille 0-08
