B League Division 1 – Round 5

Skryne and St Pats played out an exciting draw in this B League Division 1 match in Skryne last evening (Tuesday). On a cold but dry evening ideal for football this was an entertaining game in which no quarter was asked or given. Referee Gerry Keoghan kept a tight rein on proceedings which threatened to get out of hand on occasions. The uncompromising nature of the match kept the small crowd interested right up to the final whistle.

While St. Pats may feel that they should have gone home with both points, overall a draw was, possibly, the fairest result. Both sides missed a number of chances for scores – both goals and points – so it was a question of who missed most. In the end the Stamullen men probably did although the Blues gave away possession too easily and then tended to foul their opponents resulting in St. Pats scoring five frees to Skryne’s one.

For Skryne the difference between losing and gaining a draw was the excellent performance of goalkeeper and Man of the Match Des McAvinney. Demo made three superb saves, one in the first and two in the second half to keep Skryne in the game. He was well supported in defence by David Carroll and Barry Clarke. The two David’s – McGoldrick and Lynch – held their own in midfield while Jason Fox and Frank Carty did well upfront.

Skryne finished the game stronger and almost sneaked a win right at the very end. Eight different players hit the target for them which is a good return and with a bit of luck they can improve on this performance as there are more difficult games ahead.
