Lucky Win for Skryne

A League Division 2 – Round 4

Skryne were happy to come away from Duleek with the points from this A League match against their hosts Duleek/Bellewstown. Any win is a good win whether lucky or not especially at a venue where League points have been hard to come by in recent years.

In this game Skryne were boosted by a fortuitous goal finished by Aidan Tuite when he fisted Paddy Carpenter’s point attempt (which dropped short) to the net. This put the Blues back in front after they had fallen behind to two Duleek/Bellewstown goals 18 minutes into the second half. Darragh Campion added the final point to leave just two between the sides at the final whistle. Having said that Skryne’s first half performance was such that overall they deserved their victory.

Duleek/Bellewstown began the match much more positively than Skryne and scored two good points to lead early on. After 10 minutes Skryne supporters may have thought ‘here we go again’ another defeat in Duleek. But three pointed frees from Mark Battersby settled the visitors nerves and for the last fifteen minutes of this first half Skryne bossed the game and probably should have been further in front at the break. In this period the game was won and lost as Skryne went from two points down to four points up and realistically half time came too quickly for them their domination was so great.
Half time – Duleek/Bellewstown 0-04 Skryne 0-08.

The second half was different and Duleek/Bellewstown’s two goals gave them the upper hand and nearly won the game for them. As said before goals win games and in this case Skryne’s ‘lucky’ one was the most important.

With seven different players on the scoresheet Skryne can be reasonably satisfied with the result and the performance apart from the concession of the two goals.

Skryne – Ian Gillett. Eoghan Greene, Mark Harrington, Mark Jordan. Paddy Carpenter, Niall Lenehan, Adam O’Sullivan. Aidan Tuite (1-0), Ciaran Lenehan (0-1). Eoin Smyth (0-1), Brian Davis (0-4), Jason Fox (0-1). Paddy Fox, Darragh Campion (0-2), Mark Battersby (0-4).
Sub used – Niall Morley.
