Heavy defeat for Skryne Juniors

Goals win games. That statement was to prove very true tonight for Dunsany in this win over a disappointing Skryne in the Junior A football semi final played in Ashbourne. Goals win games particularly goals of the soft variety. Christmas came early for Dunsany as Skryne were in a benevolent mood as early as the first 30 seconds of this match. That’s when the first goal was conceded and the Blues struggled from then on. They battled well for a time after this but just when they may have felt they were getting back in the game with the score 1-04 to 0-03 they conceded an even more bizarre goal than the one in the first minute. With a high ball seemingly going wide the Skryne goalie Dean Reddy began to prepare for the kickout but with the keepers back to the play a Dunsany forward punched the ball to the Skryne net to the dismay of everybody in the ground. If Skryne struggled after the first goal they were dead and buried after this one and Dunsany scored two more points to leave the half time score 2-6 to 0-3 in favour of the now rampant Reds.

Skryne did begin the second half brightly and Niall Morley scored two good points to reduce the deficit to manageable proportions only for disaster to strike once again in the form of a third Dunsany goal. Again there was a mixup in the Skryne goalmouth and the ball was stroked to the net quite easily. Game over. The match petered out to its inevitable end with Dunsany saving their best until last with their fourth goal being the pick of the lot to finish off the scoring and a comprehensive victory by 4-11 to 0-07.
Skryne bemoaned the fact of being short 4 players – 3 injured and 1 on holidays but with Dunsany being in such form it’s debatable whether a full side for the Blues would have made any difference. Dunsany were deserving winners and now go on to the final with yet another chance to win the Junior Championshp which they have threatened to do for the last few years.
Ironically Skryne may have had the best player on the field in full back Eoghan Greene who was outstanding. When your team is so heavily beaten it is saying a lot to be rated so highly and this young man can be proud of his performance and look forward to better days ahead. He got most help from Dermot Brennan in defence and Ronan McCabe and Niall Morley in attack.
