Draw match in Skryne

A League Division 1 – Round 5
This A League match played in Skryne yesterday ended in a low scoring draw match at seven points each. On a cold but dry afternoon neither team deserved to win the game and both did just about enough to draw an evenly contested match.
Skryne played against the light breeze in the first half and led at the break by 3 points to 2. Both teams found scores hard to come by and Skryne in particular kicked too many wides including some close in frees.
With both defences on top the game was always going to be close and therefore every point was vital. From Skryne’s point of view this was a chance to wipe out the memory of last Wednesday’s horror show in Enfield and to be fair this performance went some way towards doing that especially in defence. All six defenders played well with Declan Morley, Mark Harrington and Ciaran Lenehan very much to the fore.
The second half began with the Kells men a lot more determined than they were in the first and they scored three points without reply to go two up. Then the home team recovered their form and could have won the match after Lenny’s free had levelled up the score with a few minutes to go. They had two chances for the win but one fell short and the other went wide so the League points were shared. Aidan Tuite and Donie Ryan worked hard at midfield while up front Paddy Fox and substitute Jason Fox were most dangerous.
While it was a big improvement from Wednesday night the scoring rate will have to improve for the bigger Championship tasks ahead.
