Defeat in Ashbourne
Donaghmore Ashbourne 3-11 Skryne 0-13
A League Division 1 – Round 8
The saying ‘Goals win games’ was never more true than in this A League match played in Ashbourne in ideal conditions for good football. The two teams meet again in the next round of the Senior Championship later in the year so neither were anxious to give too much away in this one. Skryne gave as good as they got everywhere except on the scoreboard and the concession of three goals meant they were always playing catch-up. In fact they were doing this from very early on when they conceded the first of these goals after less than two minutes with Donaghmore Asbourne’s first attack. However Skryne recovered sufficiently and Mark Battersby kicked all five points in this half to leave just that goal still between the sides at half time – Don Ash 1-5 Skryne 0-5.
Don Ash began the second half almost as good as they did the first but this time had three quick points on the board before substitute Allan Carty replied with one for Skryne who then proceeded to cut that five point lead back to just two through Brian Davis, Conor O’Brien and Ciaran Lenehan. Yet another Donaghmore Ashbourne goal cancelled out these scores and restored their five point lead. Ronan McCabe then had the Blues best score of the game when he made his way from defence to finish off an excellent four man move. Don Ash scored another point before Skryne rallied yet again and had three further points from Allan Carty and Mark Battersby again, before their last one, a free kick, from a difficult angle by John Morley. Yet another goal and a point left Don Ash with a flattering seven point lead at the final whistle.
