Ratoath 7-16 Skryne 1-03

Hard luck to Skryne U16’s who were beaten by a very impressive Ratoath side in Ratoath this evening . This was a must win game for Skryne who needed to win this game to have any chance to make it into the playoffs. However, Skryne have found life in Division 1 to be unforgiving at times with narrow losses to Simonstown and Summerhill along with facing up against some very strong teams like Ratoath and Dunboyne who have the luxury of having large panels of players to pick from. Skryne have competed well in this Division and have generally proven to be a hard nut to crack.

Tonight was not one of those nights. Skryne had a number of lads who had clocked up a lot of mileage on various football pitches in the days prior to this game with some of the lads having played in the minor semi-final yesterday evening, others playing with the various Meath teams over the weekend and James Finnerty had also been busy playing soccer in the days before this game. From the off it was obvious that Skryne were off the pace and lacked the sharpness necessary to compete with Ratoath who started the game in whirlwind fashion registering 2-03 to 0-00 after only 9 minutes. Skryne responded with a goal and a point of their own on the 10th and 11th minute, but Ratoath had this game by the scruff of the neck and were dominant in every area of the pitch. Skryne managed to grab 2 more points in the first half to bring their tally to 1-03. However, Ratoath tacked on score after score and were relentless in their pursuit of a win. At half-time Ratoath led by 7-07 to 1-03. Things didn’t improve for Skryne in the second half. Tired legs contributed to more mistakes and further scoring from the rampant Ratoath team. Skryne didn’t register a score in the second half as the Ratoath defence were in a very stingy mood. The final whistle couldn’t have come quick enough.

Skryne will look back at this campaign with disappointment, but the lads have shown spade loads of potential in many of the games. They were extremely unlucky in the Simonstown and Summerhill games where they lost by the minimum margins in games where they really should have won. We will no doubt be seeing this bunch of lads achieve success going forward.
